Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett has come under intense scrutiny following remarks made during a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles. Addressing the audience, Crockett referred to Governor Greg Abbott, who has used a wheelchair since a 1984 accident left him paralyzed, as “Governor Hot Wheels.” You all know she added, we have Governor Hot Wheels down there. Let us so begin right immediately. Honey, he’s a mess; his sole attractive quality is that. Many party officials responded fast to object to the comments. Texas Senator John Cornyn said, “shameful,” and “disgraceful,” the remarks were.

Similarly, the National Republican Congressional Committee criticized Jasmine Crockett, with spokesperson Mike Marinella stating, “Jasmine Crockett is the perfect spokesperson for today’s Democrats — out of touch and completely unhinged.” In response to the backlash, Crockett clarified her intentions on social media. She asserted that her comments were not aimed at Greg Abbott‘s disability but were a critique of his policies, particularly the transportation of migrants to cities led by Black mayors. Crockett explained, “I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable.”

Despite her clarification, the controversy has intensified. Representative Randy Weber of Texas announced plans to introduce a resolution to censure Jasmine Crockett for her remarks, describing her behavior as “a disgrace to everything Texas and the United States stands for.”

Disability rights advocates have also expressed disappointment. They pointed out that Crockett has a history of backing disability rights, but stressed that comments like these keep shame and exclusion alive. They told officials to talk about policies instead of insulting people personally and to be careful not to use words that could make minority groups uncomfortable.

This is the most recent negative incident involving Jasmine Crockett. In the past, she has publicly and angrily argued with Republican colleagues like Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Nancy Mace. These incidents have helped her to seem even more like a contentious and strong-willed Congressperson. How this issue will influence Crockett’s ties with House members or his political future is yet unknown.
