Alvin Holsey was born on July 12, 1965 in Fort Valley, Georgia, U.S. He attended Morehouse College under the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program and graduated in 1988 with a B.S. in Computer Science. Later, he earned a Master of Science in Management from Troy State University in 1995, and attended Joint Forces Staff College in 2010 for further professional military education.
Holsey was commissioned in 1988 through NROTC, beginning what would become a distinguished naval career. Early in his service, he was trained as a naval aviator, flying helicopters such as the SH-2F Seasprite and SH-60B Seahawk. Throughout deployments, he served aboard several Navy ships including USSâŻJesseâŻL. Brown (FFâ1089), USSâŻNicholson (DDâ982), USSâŻVreeland (FFâ1068), USSâŻVella Gulf (CGâ72), USSâŻGettysburg (CGâ64), and USSâŻSimpson (FFGâ56).
One of his earlier commands was of the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 37 (HSLâ37). He later commanded the USS Makin Island (LHD 8) â the U.S. Navyâs first hybridâelectric propulsion amphibious assault ship. As a flag officer, Holsey led Carrier Strike Group One, embarked aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).
His shore and staff assignments were extensive and varied: roles included aide to senior Naval Air Force leadership, operations officer on the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Jâ3, Operations Directorate, European Command), and many leadership and placement duties in personnel command. In 2020, Holsey was selected to serve as director of Task Force One Navy â an initiative to evaluate issues within society and the military that affect Navy readiness. Between 2021â2022, he was Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel and Commander of Navy Personnel Command.
On 1 February 2023, Holsey became Military Deputy Commander of United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). On 7 November 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Admiral and took command of SOUTHCOM, making him one of the top U.S. military leaders responsible for all U.S. military operations in Central and South America plus the Caribbean.
Alvin Holsey is married to Dr. Stephanie Holsey, and the couple has been together for over 34 years. Dr. Stephanie Holsey is both an educator and a dentist, reflecting a commitment to professional excellence similar to her husbandâs. While they have maintained a strong family partnership throughout his naval career, there is no public information indicating that they have any children.
Over his long career, Holsey has earned many awards and decorations, including:
These awards show both his actual leadership (in battle and as fleet commander) and his administrative and people-management duties over many years.
Holseyâs career shows that he is good at running operations, managing people, and leading at the strategic level. His background in aviation, ship command, personnel reform, task-force leadership, and high-level staff duties shows that he is flexible and has a deep understanding of how the navy and joint forces work. He was in charge of a very important strategic area at SOUTHCOM: Central and South America, the Caribbean, maritime security, operations against drugs, and US military cooperation in the area.
However, bear in mind that this estimate of net worth is not supported by government documents. Like many other high-ranking military leaders, Holseyâs wealth is largely concealed.
Admiral Alvin Holsey story is interesting for a number of reasons:
Alvin Holseyâs journey â from a computerâscience student at Morehouse College to a four-star admiral commanding major theaters of U.S. military operations â reflects dedication, skill, and leadership across a long and distinguished naval career. As he retires in December 2025, his legacy will likely be evaluated not only in terms of operations conducted under his watch, but also in his contributions to personnel management, naval modernization, and representation at the highest levels of military command.
